Any tips for stained glass art?

I want to learn to do stained glass art and I'm starting to research it. One thing I don't quite understand is if most crafters buy pre-colored glass, create their own (with chemicals) or paint their glass. I'm also looking for more info on framing the glass as an actual window as opposed to framing for hanging.

  1. Most people buy art glass, which is colored all the way through. I think you would be unhappy with the painted on stuff. Here is a website that will give you some tips on getting started. It is a great hobby. http://www.hobbies-and-pastimes.com/stainedglass.html
  2. Right now the hobby of stained glass is very expensive. When I first started a roll of solder was 5.99 now it runs around 15.99-17.99. Copper foil is out of sight as well. Your supplies to get started are kind of expensive because you want a high quality soldering iron that will hold a steady temp as you work, also expensive. I now have 9 full windows that I have made work for and clipped it into the very edge of the window. You want to buy stained glass to begin with the determine if you want to get into the art further. It can be very expensive to get started and even continue right now. Put stained glass in google and start clicking on links. If you like I can email you a picture of how the window I have done turned out.
